114 Aug. 14, Clifton. 2nd Inns. 321 227 total. 422 415 1st Inn s , Gloucestershire 101 Lancashire 188 Gloucestershire won by 7 runs. The solitary victory gained last season by the Gloucestershire eleven. The success was the more remarkable as the team had to follow on against a majority of 87 runs. It may safely be said that the game was won bv four men—Painter, Woof, Mr. Pullen, and Mr. W. G. Grace: Painter scored 30 and 116 (a very brilliant innings), Woof took \ \ wickets (5 in the first innings and 6 in the second), Mr. Pullen scored 03 and 74, and Mr. W. G. Grace made 31 and 43 and took 5 wickets. So delighted*were the Clifton people with the performances of Painter and Woof that they raised subscriptions for them, the amount in each case being about £30. The finish of the match was intensely exciting. por Lancashire, Kev. V. F. Boyle scored 23 and a capital innings of 6 G(not out), and Mr. Hornby 40 and 49. Aug. 18. —Cheltenham. — Gloucestershire v. Australians. — (&a Australian Review.) 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Total. Aug. 21, Gloucestershire 388 40 428 Cheltenham. Middlesex 255 295 550 Drawn. Gloucestershire had not lost a wicket. With weak bowling on both sides, and the wicket in first rate con dition, long scores were almost inevitable. Had time permitted the game to be played out, Gloucestershire would in all probability have gained an easy victory, only 123 runs being wanted with all 10 Avickets to fall On each side the hitting A\ras brilliant, the chief honours being gained by Mr. Pullen for Gloucestershire and by Mr. O’Brien for Middlesex. Mr. Pullen was four hours at the wickets, and played wonderfully good cricket for 161—by far the highest score he has ever made in a good match. There was scarcely a fault to be found with his innings. Mr. O’Brien scored 110 and 58, playing very finely each time. In this match he came back to form after about two months of ill-success. The other high scorers Avere, the Hon. Alfred Lyttelton 3 and 71, Mr. I. D. Walker 50 and 27, Mr. Pearson 52 and 15, and Mr. Vernon 21 and 49, for Middlesex, and Mr. E. M. Grace 67 and 13 (not out), and Mr. Brain 40, for Gloucestershire. While Messrs. Pullen and E. M. Grace Avere together on the second day no feAver than 190 runs Avere added to the Gloucestershire score. Woof took 9 Middlesex Avickets, hut 211 runs were hit from him. 1st Inns . 2nd Inns, Total. Aug. 25, Gloucestershire 484 — 481 Clifton. Surrey 464 _ 464 • Drawn. One of the most extraordinary matches of the season. Bain only admitted of seventy minutes’ play on the third day, but even had there been a full day’s cricket the match could not have been brought to a definite issue. The Avicket was in perfect order, and the batting in each innings obtained an absolute mastery over the bowling. If for no other cause than that two individual scores of over a hundred Avere obtained on each side, the match Avould have been a memorable one. Surrey had first innings, and it was certainly a big performance on the part of Gloucestershire to go in against a total of 464 and surpass it by 20 runs*
