Yorkshiie 181 97 278 Yorkshire won by 3 wickets. * I A very good match, in which Lancashire, though represented by a strong team, sadly missed the services of Mr. A. G. Steel. On the second afternoon, Yorkshire went in with only 97 runs to win, and so finely did the Lancashire men bowl and field that 5 wickets fell for 44. The chances for the moment looked in favour of the home county, but a fine innings by Ulyett turned the scale. A special feature of the game was the capital batting of Mr. L. E. Steel, who scored 51 and 30 (not out). His brother, Mr. H. B. Steel,- scored 1 and 48. For Yorkshire, the scoring was very even, but not individually remarkable. Ulyett made 20 and 32, Peel 37 and 7, and Lee 23 and 19. In Lancashire’s first innings, Ulyett took 5 wickets for 38 runs. r 11 July 14.—Sheffield.—Lancashire o. I] A thoroughly well-deserved victory for Surrey, the main element of success being the bowling of Mr. Horner and Barratt. The latter took 7 wickets for 60 runs, and 4 for 54; and in the second innings Mr. Horner met with brilliant success, taking 6 wickets for 34 runs. Barlow bowled finely for Lancashire, obtaining in all 11 wickets for 97 runs. I he wicket was not a particularly good one, but nevertheless some fair batting was shown. For Surrey, Mr. Shuter scored 56 and 5, Mr. Diver 4 and 33, Wood 34 (not out) and 1, Maurice Bead 1 and 32, ancl Mr. Key 30 and 0. Mr. A, G. Steel made 39 and 20 for Lancashire. Early on the*second afternoon news reached the Old Trafford of the death ol Mrs. Grace—mother of the celebrated cricketers—and as a mark of sympathy and respect, the match was at once abandoned. So far as the game proceeded, there was nothing specially noteworthy in the cricket. Mr. AY. G. Grace, however, scored 53 and 1 (not out) for Gloucestershire, and Mr. Hornby 46 for Lancashire.
