Out of ten first-class County matches, five were won, four were lost, and one was left unfinished. In considering this record, however, it is important to remember that Lancashire was only able on rare occasions to put its full strength into the field. Mr. A. G. Steel, for instance, only played in four matches, Mr. Royle in three matches, and Mr. H. B. Steel in five. It has never been Mr. A. G. Steel’s custom to play regularly for his County, and therefore too much importance must not be attached to his absence, hut the fact remains that in three of the four matches in which he appeared Lancashire proved successful. Were he always available, the gain to the eleven would of course he enormous. The hatting of the team suffered terribly from the falling off in Mr. Hornby’s play, and from Barlow’s curious inability to make runs in County matches, In
