9 » 0 L « t e i i \ 5 e t extremely well. But for blunders in tlie field, however, Surrey’s first total would have been considerably under 151. Humphreys and Jesse Hide made mistakes that proved very costly, and had a material effect on the game. On the third day Surrey went in with only 30 to get to win, but in accomplishing this light task 6 wickets fell for 27 runs. For the winners Mr. A\. W. Read scored a good hut lucky innings of 83, while for the losers Mr. H. Whitfeld made 10 and 41 (not out.) The Sussex captain was at the wickets three hours and a quarter for his 41, going in first and taking out his bat. His defence was admirable. First-class County matches played, 16—won 7. lost 4, drawn 5. All matches played, 21—won 13, lost 6, drawn 5. Alike in first-class county engagements and in all matches Mr. Vf W. Read heads the Surrey batting, hut, good as they are, liis performances do not equal those of 1883. Mr. Shuter shows a slight falling off, and Mr. Bowden a great improvement. Mr. Diver played in 22 matches as against 14 in 1883, but though his average in the first- class County contests is better than before, his record for all matches is not so good. Abel was less successful than in 1883, an illness in the middle of the season interfering with his practice. In bowling Mr. Horner rendered splendid service, taking wickets day after day and never seeming to tire. His average for all matches is a very fine one considering the amount of work he got through. Barratt was not so effective as in 1883, but lie also worked very hard for the county. Mr. Roller did well, and Abel so often proved successful late in an 'innings that it was a wonder Mr. Shuter did not try him earlier.
