James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1884
Gravesend; a h igh ly creditable fight was made against the same county at M anchester; two good drawn games were played w ith Su rrey ; and Sussex was decisively beaten at Maidstone. Goming as it did at the end of an unfortunate season, the success against Lancashire was exceedingly welcome. It certainly did a good deal to raise the spirits of Kent cricketers. A s in m an jr previous years, Lo rd Harris was the mainstay of his eleven. N o other batsman who played in all the first-class engagements of his county can show so fine a result. Against Yorkshire, at Gravesend, he accomplished one of the greatest perform ances of the season, scoring 80 (not out) in the first innings and 79 in the second. A pa rt from the efforts of the captain, the Kent batting fell below expectation. Messrs. E. E. S. Tylecote and W . H. Patterson were not up to their standard of previous years, and Mr. Cecil Wilson, from want o f practice, did not approach his form of 1882. The Hon. Ivo B l igh reappeared in the eleven after his long illness, and played two or three useful innings. The county was fortunate in securing the services of two valuable recruits— Mr. L . W ilson and M r. Christopherson. The former is a batsman of considerable promise, and M r. Christopherson a fast bow ler of more than ordinary merit. M ay 24.— L o rd ’s.— Kent v. I l l Total. 232 196 Kent won by an innings and 36 runs. W ith the exception of Mr. Wh itfeld , who scored 14 and 53 (not out), the batting of the Sussex team was very feeble. Eor Kent, Lord Harris played a brilliant innings of 95, and was w e ll supported by George Hearne (25), Hon. Ivo B ligh (24), Mr. Tylecote (19), and Mr. M. C. Kemp (18). The bow ling of Mr. Christopherson and Hearne proved most effective. The former, in the two innings of Sussex, took 6 wickets for 56 runs, and the latter 6 for 53 runs. Jesse Hide obtained 6 Kent wickets for 50 runs. 2nd Inns. Total. Kent 325 — 325 182 • 456 July 19, Maidstone. - • 1st Inns. Surrey 274 Drawn. Surrey had lost 4 wickets. Heavy rain prevented any play on the third day, and so an interest ing match had to be abandoned as a draw . On the first two days, the wicket was in excellent condition, as may be judged from the fact that 781 runs were scored for the loss of 24 wickets. The batting on both sides was admirable. For the home team, M r. A Penn hit very freely for 66, Lord Harris made 65, George Hearne 57, Mr. M. C. Kemp 45, and Mr. F. M. Atkins 31, w h ile for Surrey, M r . W . W .
