James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1884

89 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Total. Aug. 9, Lancashire 218 — 218 Manchester. Notts 110 90 200 Drawn. Notts had lost 2 wickets. Owing to bad weather there was no chance of playing on the second day, and rain caused frequent interruptions on the Saturday. Under more favourable circumstances Lancashire Avould, in all probability, ]i,ive been victorious. Messrs. A. 0. and I). Q. Steel played splendid cricket together, the former scoring 60 and the latter 75. For Notting hamshire, Shrewsbury made 9 and 48. In the visitors’ first innings, Watson took 7 wickets for 41 runs. Aug. 20.—Gravesend.—Lancashire v. Kent.—(See Kent Review.) Aug. 23.—Oval.—Lancashire v. Surrey.—(See Surrey Review.) Aug. 27.—Clifton.—Lancashirer.Gloucestershire.—(See Gloucestershire Review.) Matches played, 12—won 6, lost 5, drawn 1. The batting figures show a great falling-off. Only three men have an average of over 20, as against seven in 1882. Barlow has gone down from 31.13 to 26.1, Mr. Taylor from 25.6 to 18.8, Hobinson from 28.8 to 16.15, and Mr. Boyle from 22.6 to 8.6. Briggs, on the other hand, has advanced from 8.13 to 19.5. Mr. Hornby’s average was very high for the first half of the season, but after June it steadily declined. The bowling comes out remarkably well, but it was more expensive than in 1882—a na+ural result of the fine weather and hard wickets. • a • 4 •• • • • * # • 4 - * « M - f * Barlow ... . A. N.
