James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1884

85 Marlow 17. Mr. Evershed’s hitting was most brilliant. On the second evening Surrey had lost 2 wickets for 16 runs, but on the third morning the necessary number of runs was hit off for the loss of two more wickets. Mr. W. W. Read was the most successful batsman for Surrey, scoring 76 and 54. He received useful support from Mr. Diver, 69, Mr. Key 56, Henderson 41, and Abel 12 and 37 (not out). In Derbyshire’s first innings Foster played capital cricket for 81. First-class County matches played, 16—won 7, lost 5, drawn 4. All matches played, 24—won 12; lost 7, drawn 5. The batting figures speak for themselves as to the run-getting powers of the team. Not for a long series of years has Surrey possessed such a hatting side. Mr. Read, of course, stands far ahead of all his com panions. The absence of Jones seriously affected the bowling, Mr. Roller and Henderson, however, worked very hard in support of Barratt. Mr. Horner was considerably more expensive than in 1882, but for this falling off his plucky batting, on more occasions than one, went far to make amends.
