James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1884

80 Bad weather probably saved Middlesex from defeat. On the second day p lay did not begin t i l l after half-past one, and was stopped by rain a t half-past five, and on the third day the game was not resumed till tw en ty m inutes past three. The Middlesex bow ling was severely knocked about. Barnes played a cap ita l inn ings of 86, Flowers hit br illian tly for 95 (an inn ings th a t was marred by two easy chances) Shrewsbury made 42, Gunn 33, W alter W righ t 25, and Scotton 20. Mr. G. B. Studd, for Middlesex, played a fine first inn ings of 74, but was badly missed when he had made 3. On the third day, Middlesex had noth ing to play for but a draw, and the batsmen were fu lly equal to the occasion. Mr. Webbe, who had been suffering from an injured hand showed admirable cricket for 72 (not out), Mr. Walker made a very good 32, and Mr. A. P. Lucas was at the w ickets more than an hour for 7 runs. Matches played, 10—won 4, lost 2, drawn 4, The chief features o f the batting averages are the extraordinary figures of Mr. Alfred Lyttelton, Mr. R idley, and Mr. C. T. Studd. It is certain that Mr. Lyttelton was never in finer form. One cannot help regretting that nowadays he finds so l it t le time for the game. Mr. C. T. Studd never before did such great th ings for Middlesex, and was clearly the most successful cricketer of the year. Mr. Walker’s batting average has gone up from 21.2 to 34.8 (a great advance for a veteran), and Mr. G. B. Studd’s from 21.6 to 29.6. Mr. A. J. Webbe, on the other hand, owing, no doubt, to his want of practice, has fallen from 26.2 to 21.6. Mr. Paravicini played some fine innings, and was thoroughly deserving of his place in the team.
