James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1884

77 Aug. 16.—Gravesend.—Yorkshire v. Kent.—(See Kent Review.) Aug. 20.—Brighton.—Yorkshire r. Sussex.— (See Suseex Review.) __ . . . 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Total. Aug. 23, Yorkshire 236 198 434 Huddersfield. Middlesex 305 242 547 R4 ' Drawn. Yorkshire had lost 4 wickets. Ho match during the season was played on a more perfect wicket. A t the end of three days’ hard cricket, the ground seemed almost as firm and true as at the commencement of the game. Under such circum stances, it was not surprising that the scores were large. In all 981 runs were made for the loss of 34 wickets. On the Saturday the Middlesex men finished off their second innings in the hope of winning the match, hut the Yorkshire hatting wras so good that in three hours and ten minutes only four wickets were obtained. On both sides there was some superb batting. For Middlesex, Hon. Alfred Lyttelton made 52 and 68, Mr. I. D. Walker 76 and 5, Mr. C. T. Studd 39 and 26, Mr. Greatorex, the Harrow bey, 14 and 44 (not out), Mr. G. B. Studd 15 and 38 Mr. Paravicini 28 (not out) and 16, and Mr. Vernon 31 and 8. For Yorkshire, Hall scored 16 and 87 (not out), Mr. Lumb 70 (not out) and 24 (not out), and Ulyett 65 and 32. Hall and Mr. Lumb batted with extreme patience and judgment. Aug. 30.—Scarborough.—Yorkshire v. M.C.C. and Ground.— (See M.C.C. Review .) Matches played, 16—won 9, lost 2, drawn 5. Hall’s average is largely the result of his seven not-out innings, but it is important to remember that he generally went in first. In 1882, he only averaged 13.6. Ulyett’s aggregate score has fallen from 903 to 732, and his average from 34.19 to 29.7. Lockwood, thanks to his great innings at Gravesend, has gone up from 20 to 27.19. Peate's bowling average is less than two runs a wicket worse than in 1882, but whereas in that year he took 116 wickets, his number of wickets fell to 59. Harrison’s figures are very fine, and Emmett was often most valuable as a change. Taken all round, the bowling of the team was admirable.
