James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1884
73 With seven individual averages of over 20, the hatting figures came out extraordinarily well. Barnes, curiously enough, scored two more runs than in 1882, and played exactly the same number o f innings. A couple of not outs advance his average from 34.4 to 38.10. Shrewsbury’s average has gone down from 35.1 to 30.10, but, whereas in the previous year he played one phenomenal innnings, his batting last season was consistently excellent. Mowers has gone up from 20.9 to 32.9, and Gunn Pas made an even more remarkable advance—28.G as against 9.8. Mr. C. \V. Wright was a conspicuous disappointment. Owing to the hard wickets and Morley’s absence the bowling does not look so well as before. Shaw’s average is nearly as good as in 1882, but he took on ly 54 wickets, instead o f 71. # BATTING AVERAGES. Matches. Inns. Runs. Most in an Inns. Most in a Match. Times not out. Aver.
