Underwood, a young Nottingham professional, scored 124 for Devonshire, and Mr. W. D. Ham ilton, of the 1882 Oxford U n ivers ity Eleven, 114 for the M.C.C. On the first day the attendance exceeded three thousand, and on Tuesday i t numbered about four thousand. On the Wednesday afternoon the match was finished in a perfect storm of wind and rain. W ith the advantage of first inn ings the M.C.C. had the match in hand from start to finish. Their decisive v ictory was chiefly due to the fine ba tting of Mr. W h itfe ld and Mr. C. C. Clarke, and the effective bowling o f Messrs. C. T. Studd and A. G. Steel. Mr. Whitfeld made 74—an inn ings tha t was free from an y th in g like fault, and Mr. Clarke h it finely for 63. Mr. Studd took 8 w ickets at a cost of 127 and Mr. Steel* 7 w ickets for 99 runs.
