The victory was mainly due to the splendid batting of Barnes, who vent in first and carried out his bat for 141. The feature of the match was the fine cricket shown by George Hearne, who scored 67 (not out) and 132. In neither innings did he give a chance. The other M.C.C. professionals did remarkably well, Gunn scoring 19 and 87, Attewell 0 and 41, West 38 and 26, and T. Mycroft 24 and 36 (not out). Northumberland only averted a follow on by one run. 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Total. July 27, M.C.C. and Ground 525 — 525 Lord’s. Rugby School 92 227 319 M.C.C. won by an innings and 206 runs. The weak bowlirig of the Rugby boys was hit to all parts of the field, and nine members of the M.C.C. team reached double figures. Mr. G. R. Burge played a splendid hitting innings of 123, Mr. P. H. Martineau scored 95, Mr. A. S. Winterbotham 65, and Mr. E, G. Lucas 53. In the second innings of Rugby, Messrs. Cobb and Harrison played good cricket, the former scoring 85 and the latter 57. 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Total. July 30, M.C.C. and Ground 195 214 409 Lord’ s. Somersetshire 302 — 302 Drawn. M.C.C. had lost 9 wickets. At the close of the first day’s play Somersetshire seemed to have a victory in prospect. The County team had scored 302 and the M.C.C. had lost 5 wickets for 51 runs. For the whole of the second day, however, the Club eleven were batting, and the final drawing of stumps left them with an advantage of 107 runs. On both sides there was some capital batting. For Somersetshire, Ambler, a Yorkshire professional, who plays under the residential qualification, scored 76, Mr. F. W. Terry 54 , and Mr. Sainsbury 51. For the M.C.C., O’Shaughnessy played a first innings of 89, Barnes made 10 and 57, Mr. A. II. Heath 6 and 56, and George Hearne 20 and 38. The match was limited to two days.
