B y W. H. SOUTHON. f p I I E FOLLOWING TABLES HAVE BEEN COMPILED with the view of showing the relative merits of the nine first-class Counties, as evidenced by the County matches played during the past season. Table I. show's the number of runs made for and against each * o . County, and the number of wickets taken and lost. In this table, it should be observed, the Counties are placed in the order in which they would appear if the usual course were adopted of putting that County first which had suffered the fewest defeats. Table II. shows in the first column (in runs and decimal parts of a • w run) the average number of runs obtained by each County for every wicket that fell, and in the second column the average cost of eaclt wicket taken. The third column (which is obtained by dividing the first by the second) show's the superiority or inferiority, as the case may be, of each County to its opponents taken as a whole. Absolute equality, it should be noted, would be represented by 1 in this column. TABLE 1.
