James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1884

85 when time was called he and Mr. Read were still together, the latter having scored 51 (not out) by flue patient cricket. Score, 248 for 7 wickets. Next day we completed our innings for 294, of which Mr. Read and Bates had added another 40 before being parted. After the usual interval, Mr. Massie and Bannerman started the batting, and runs came at a terrific pace; at 56, however, the former was bowled by Barlow, and at /2 Bates, who had been bowling magnificently, got one past Banner- man. Horan was caught and bowled to Barnes; and Bates then accom plished the “ hat trick,” getting Messrs. MtDonnell, Giffen, and Bonnor with three successive balls; the innings closed for 114, Too much cannot be said in praise of Bates’s bowling on the hard wicket. He managed to find the “ spot” which the Australian bowlers had failed to find, and used it most effectively, as his analysis shows. Being in a minority of 180. our adversaries followed on and at “ time ” had lost a wicket (Mr. Murdoch’s) for 28. ’ On Monday the match was brought to a conclusion; a curious feature in the day’s play was that eight of the Australian team got into double figures, while the aggregate amounted only to 153. Bonnor hit finely for 31, and Bates again succeeded in getting 7 wickets: to the latter our victory in an innings must in a great measure be attributed.
