Colours, chocolate and gold. Matches, 6—won 6, lost 1. H. G. Weddcrbum heads both bowling and batting averages, but has played little this season; a very good all-round man. E. H. P. Salmon only played in one match, viz., the return against Bangalore, but then showed that his hitting powers were in no way impaired, and that he still knew how to take the wicket and field; hope he may get an appointment in and play more for Madras next season, as, with a little practice, would be second to none in India behind the sticks, p. J. H. Arhuthnot (Rugby ), best all-round man in the club; patient bat, but rarely lets off a loose b a l l ; keeps wicket fa ir ly ; safe field; bowls favst round and lobs. C. E. Orman, a dangerous bat when well set, having great hitting powers; a most brilliant and certain field. H. C. King, a very hard, clean hitter; makes runs faster than wiy one in the club, but has been unfortunate; fair change bowler and A1 field; as sec. is the right man in the right place. Major Hope, the possession of a good eye still makes him a batsman not to to be despised; plays forward w e ll; a good catch, but no longer very quick in the field. H. F. S. Ramsden as a bat is unsteady at first, but improves wonderfully if he has the luck to get set; bowls slow round with a big break back, but loses heart if he is hit, and is inclined to get short; has bowled mostsuccessfully throughout the season; an energetic field. W . P. Crake (Harrow ), good all-round man; bats in pretty stylo, and drives well to the off and on ; a fast bowler on his day, effective; should practise more. Major Pennycuick continues good defence, with hard hitting powers to the off, but has a cramped style on the on ; bowls medium pace very straight, and consequently gets wickets generally ; a good field. Col. Prendergast has captained the team through the season; would do better if he would change the bowling oftener, and read the Riot Act a bit; a hard hitter regardless of good bowling, dislikes slows; good field near in. G. F. Winter, fair bat, but has a trick of getting I b w ; good change bow le r ; has fielded well, and made some brilliant catches this season. H. Scott, a hard hitter, and has played up throughout the season ; good held at cover-point. Major McLeod, a pretty bat, cuts well, but wants defence on the off, the lack of which has proved a thorn in "his side this season; bowls fast round, but is rather expensive, and inclined to bowl short. W . L. C. Baddeley hardly made a run, and has fallen to pieces in a most extraordinary way, probably through nervousness; fair but slow field; has been known to bowl. 1882. October 14, 21, Chepauk.
