208 Blakey ( 6 . 8 ) bowled splendidly throughout the season, as his average will show; g00(i field, but did not improve much as a b a t ; the school are fortunate in keeping him for next year. F. L. Perkins (4.2), captain for 1884, though weak in batting, fuu* justified his selection to a place in the eleven; he has made steady progress, and several times, by careful play, kept up his wicket when runs were wanted; energetic in the field. F.^Dale (5.5), a very unreliable bat, but played one good innings in the return match with the C. O. S . ; showed marked improvement in fielding, and made some excellent long catches. G. S. Scott (10.8) is a most patient and steady b a t ; good defence, but slow run-getter; did not come up to the expectations formed of him in the early part of the season; good field, and a fairly successful slow bowler. J. q Gibb (11.5) made very great progress in batting; his forward play was good, hut carried to excess; slow, but generally sure run.getter; rather careless in the field A. G. Atkinson ( 4 . 6 ), a medium-pace bowler, though much inclined to pitch short- good field at point, where, and also off his own bowling, he made several excellent catches. W . V. D. Beresford (3.2), a fair bowler, but with no p lu c k ; poor bat and moderate field. T. E. Rammell (3.3) did not keep up the promise which he gave at the early part of the season; in practice batted well, but usually failed in a match • capital field everywhere. H. E. Burch (4.7), another unreliable b a t ; good style, but very slow ; variable in the field. H. Williamson ( 6 ), a very fair hitter, with weak defence; is likely to turn out usefu l; fair field, and ought to make a good change bowler. ’ W .M . Wilcox (2.9) has not done much this season ; might make a serviceable left-hand slow bowler with steady practice ; moderate only with bat and in the field. B owling A verages . Rowley, a dashing and plucky bat, being especially strong on the leg side ; good change bowler, sure catch, poor field. Mr. J. L. Surcombe, a very pretty bat, hits we ll to the off; good slow round-arm bow ler; splendid catch and field. C. E. Burrows (capt.) captained fairly well, though at times lacking in judgm ent; fair bat and splendid catch. F. H. White, a very good bat, getting his runs in good style; good slow round-arm bowler; sure catch and good field. W . J. Bennets, a very steady bat, but owing to ill-health was unable to play much. O. C. Cleave improved as a batsman, but as a bowler did not do so well as expected ; good catch and fair field. F. Skey, useful bat, but should practice hitting; fair field; would make a splendid long-stop. C. E. W . Ogilvie, a very fair bat, but his cricket is spoilt by nervousness; good long-stop. F. Vise gives great promise as a batsman, very hard hitter; good field. W . Thompson, a moderate bat, fair field, but does not put enough energy into the game. H. Amies, one of the most rising cricketers of the team; good w icket-keeper; nice bat and field. G. H. Marsland occasionally makes runs, but is not a safe bat, and rather fond of hitting across; a good round-arm bowler. W . Leng, a fair left-hand bat, but inclined to poke ; unproved towards the end of the season ; a medium field. H. H. L a Mothe has not played much this season owing to illness ; is an uncertain bat, but a good field and sp endid thrower. C.
