B owpen ,* a really first-class all-ronnd cricketer; good wicket-keeper, good field, and a brilliant bat, playing and hitting all round with great freedom ; played for the Connty of Surrey, and made a very promising d e b v t ; is a good medium-pace" bowler. A. G. C hristmas , good left-hand bat, his hitting being very strong, especially on the leg side ; good field at long leg, but must learn to return the ball quicker; is a good change fast right-hand bowler. A. P. D ouglas is sore to im­ prove with age, having a splendid style, playing the ball very hard, especially on the off side ; he must, however, stand up to balls on the leg side; first-class long-stop, having a verv quick return, which the other members of the team should copy. S. G reenup , a first-class medium bowler, after Alfred Shaw’s style, with a very good break; a good but, but did not come up to promise the early part of the season; must be more ener. getic in the field, being somewhat slow. F. t t . J ohnstone , a first-rate fast bowler, varying his pace with deceptive delivery ; was not able to bow l until the back end of the season through a sprained ankle ; moderate bat, with stiff style ; will improve with practice at the nets; fair field. C. K. T. J ones improved very much in his batting, but fell off in his bowling; a good field anywhere, and sure catch; captain of the .eleven, w7hich post he has tilled satisfactorily. R. T. P. K nott , a good apd steady hat, always going in first; plays very steadily; hits very well on the off side, but must endeavour to hit more on the leg side ; a splendid field at point; a very good change howler. W. R. M. L e * ke , an improving and energetic cricketer, taking great pains in every department of the game; bats well, and plays very strong, especially on the on side; is somewhat nervous, but this will probably wear off m time; good field any. wrhere, and is a good long-stop (captain for 1884). S. G. M anfikld , a first-class field at long leg and cover, having a quick return, and works very hard in the field; must try to play the game, and not to get his runs in a fewrhits; his average will then improve. G. N ewton , a very pretty bat, but too anxious to get runs; a good slow round-arm bowler, varying pace and pitch, with good break ; a fair field. A. D.
