W ist (capt.) succeeded to the captaincy in tho middle of the season, and showed good judgment in the field ; was not so well suited by the dry wickets of this year, but howled with good effect; bats in free style, and hits especially hard to le g ; an excellent field anywhere. F. M arshall as a bat has immensely improved since last yea r ; plays with much more confidence, drives well, and hits finely to leg; a brilliant field at cover-point, with a very quick return, which has saved many a run. J . L k F leming has quite fulfilled the promise of lust year in batting; when set, cuts and drives to the off magnificently; rarely fails to make runs when most wanted; a hard worker in the deep field, and" a useful slow bowler (captain for 1884). T. P. D raper , a fair but somewhat uncertain bat; plays forward well, but is weak in his back play ; a moderate field. W. R asiilhgh has been the mainstay of the batting this year; never fails to score, and on several occasions has broken the bowling for his side; has an obstinate defence, drives well, and rarely lifts a ba ll; cutR very prettily and cleanly; much improved in the field, but still somewhat slow. A. 0. H ubbard scored regularly during the first part of the season; has fallen off slightly, but is a steady bat, with great punishing power all round; moro successful behind the wickets this year, and a useful medium-paced bowler. J. W. L ittle , a very promising; bat; has played some good innings; might be quicker in judging runs, and sharper in the field; bowls straight right-hand. G. C. H ubbard , an excellent right-hand bowler, sometimes with a most destructive curl from leg; has been of the utmost value to the eleven; likely to be a very careful bat next year; a safe field. W. T. H. D anby , a neat ba t ; plays in fair style, and has shown good form on several occasions, but is uncertain ; improved as a field. E. G iles , a left-handed bat; scores very fast on the off side, but weak .on the leg stump; a right-hand change bowler, with some success at tho beginning of the season. F. G. H ayward , a straight medium.paced bowler, and a useful change; will improve into a strong hat, with a little more power of defence j a good field.
