L eggk has been a most energetic and successful captain ; is a brilliant field, with quick return, and a sure catch; bats steadily, but has been somewhat unfortunate. H. G. M. A mos has not answered the expectations formed from his batting last year; is too eager to make runs before well set ; is an excellent wicket-keeper. R. P. S purway ’ b bowling has been good and straight as ever; bats in good style, but has not been fortunate. R. H. D. D’A jsth , the best bat in the eleven, is a powerful hitter all round, but is particularlv brilliant on the off side ; often destructive as a bowler, being very quick off the pitch. H. S. A rkwright , a good bat on a fast wicket, plays forward too much on a slow* one; is a good change bowler and energetic field. J. D. W. D avy is a strong bat, but is too eager to make runs quickly, and is rather wanting in defence; quick in the field. J, B. B arton , a careful bat and fair change bowler. C. E. B rown , rigg promises to be a strong bat, rather rough at present; is a quick run-getter, with good defence; apt to run over the ball in the field. J. D. F. C ampbkll is a fine field at cover-point; often difficult as a bowler; promises well, but is uncertain as a bat. G. H. G. A lexander bats correctly, with great coolness and patience; can bo useful as a wicket-keeper. Oi r BATTING AVERAGES. , Times Inns, not out. ■• ♦’• Runs. Most in an Inns. Aver. R. G. Matches, 11—won 9, lost 2. E. F. K earsey * (capt.), a really good left-hand bowler, medium pace, especially dangerous on a fast wicket; punishing bat, with good otr drive; most successful as captain, with thorough knowledge of the game. 13. W m SriLSKUitv,* most successful bat; hits hard, and has strong defence; good field and sure catch. F. F. S aunders ,* useful all-round man; painstaking bat and plucky wicket-keeper. Hon. C. G. B ruce , dangerous batsman when set, catting well, and hitting hard and low to leg; erratic but useful fast bowler; poor field. F. G. J. F ord , perhaps the best bat in the team; plays in very good style, and can hit freely; promising left-hand bowler; much improved in the field; with care ought to become quite first-rate. L. G. B. J. F ord , brilliant bat on his day, but too fond of hitting; improved m helding, and likely to become a useful bowler (captain for 1884). C. A. H empson improved vastly as a batsman ; hits beautifully to the off, but still weak on tne leg side fine field and certain catch. A. H. J. C ochrane , a fast left hand bowler; straight and very difficult at times; serviceable bat, often gets runs when they are most wanted; capital field. II.
