190 Bound defence and good bitting powers; good field in the country, and able to bowl av a change. F. G. P adwick has much improved in batting since last year, adding stronger defence to his hitting powers; very fine field, covering the ground very quickly (capt. for 1884). F. D. Q uinton ,* a very good bat, much improved since last year, especially in hitting powers; a quick and effective field at mid-off. H. T. K eeling , a very steady bat, but hardly makes sufficient use of his strength for h itting ; a fast and at times effective though rather erratic bowler; good cover-point. L. O. M eyrick , a small but remarkably steady bat, proving of very great use in breaking the bowling; as a field is very weak, and must pay careful attention to this department of the game. J. P. C heales a steady, but rather slow run-getting ba t; good field and safe catch. F. N. T empler ,* a very smart wicket-keeper, taking the wicket very effectively without a long-stop; as a bat can hit hard, but has little defence. T. R. S ale , a good fast bowler, but apt to get tired very qu ick ly; can hit freely, and havSimproved in defensive powers; rather slack in the field. E. C. C. F irth , a fair bat, with practice should become really good; a safe but somewhat slow field. The average ball has been awarded to E. H. B uckland , and the average bat to L. O. L. H. T aylor (capt.) has the making of a good cricketer; bats in good style, has strong defence, playing well, and drives h a r d ; good and safe wicket-keeper; should show more energy in the game. A. B. H eath , a neat bat, p lays remarkably well at times, especially excels in cutting and leg hitting; wants more confidence, and should watch the ball more ; good field, but not a lways to be trusted with a catch ; bowls fast, with occasional success. D. C. L ee fell off lamentably this season; gave promise of becoming a useful, steady bat, but began with a run of bad luck, and entirely lost confidence both in batting and fielding. H. A. H ornby , a useful bowler, with good pace well, but is rather uncertain in len g th ; a free bat, with a good straight d r iv e ; was unable to p lay in most of the matches. A. R obinson , left-hand bat; a useful man to go in first, having a very stroni defence and generally staying some time at the wickets; occasionally hits very har< to the off, but as a rule plays in cramped style; not a good field. E. M. B lair , a promising cricketer, at present greatly wanting in confidence; with experience ought to make a very useful bat, being painstaking and patient, watching the ball well, &11(^ capable of h itting; has lately taken to bow ling slow round with considerable leg break, which may prove useful next season. R. E. H eaven , a steady bat, with good defence, but little power to hit, cuts well at times; straight medium-paced bowler, without much command of length; apt to be expensive; a fair field. E. W .
