Matches, 12—won 6, lost 6, drawn 1. R. J. L ucas (capt.) has played some excellent innings, and developed into a trust- worthy and stylish batsman; drives and cuts well; occasionally bowls; as a captain was energetic and discriminating, and improved the fielding of the team. J. H ar greaves suffered much from absence, and was unable to make much progress; a good, but not showy, batsman ; slow in the field. A. C. R ichards , indispensable to the eleven as a bowler, though less successful than his perseverance, equanimity, and judgment deserved; a good hitter and field; may be a good cricketer when he ohooses, Hon. C. M. K natchbull -H ugessen , a vigorous and fairly successful batsman, but has not shaken himself free of his flourish; capital field and thrower; sometimes useful with a lob. R. H. P emberton , not so successful as was expected, as he has often played admirably for a small 6core; has a close and scientific defence and good cut; a good field, but lacks dash. A. H. S tudd , a very valuable defensive batsman, and has learnt to watch the ball carefully; plays well off his legs, but lacks power of punishing; useful slow bowler and fair field. F. M archant , a very brilliant and effective batsmen, hits magnificently, especially to leg; defence marred by a tendency to play across on the leg-stump; should yet improve and become first-rate; fair bowler and good field. F. T homas certainly shows promise as a batsman and field; has a good style, and will learn to punish when more fully grown ; neat in the field and bowls lobs. C. A. G renfell , strangely unsuccessful with the bat, though possessed of good driving powers andmuchperseverance; asound wicket-keeper; very fond of the game. Hon. A. E. P arker , a vigorous and aggressive fast bowler, most useful in an emergency at Lord’s ; an excellent field, and thoroughly plucky cricketer. H. W. F orster bids fair to be formidable both as a batsman and left-handed bowler ; has a good action, and bowls within his strength; might improve in the field, BATTING AVERAGES. • • • • • • I • • fl« • • M • • • t • * • • • I • • ¥ 4 4 • • • • • t R.
