123 1 st Inns. 2ndInna. Total. June 14, Oxford University 115 102 217 Manchester. Lancashire 427 — 427 Lancashire won by an innings and 210 runs. In excuse for the decisive defeat suffered by Oxford, it should be stated that the University had the worst of the wicket, and had, more over, to take the field without Mr. Walker, Mr. Leslie, and Mr. Robinson. Winning the toss, the Lancashire Eleven were practically sure of success before even the first day was over. Robinson made 154 and Mr. F. Taylor 96, the two batsmen putting on 237 runs while they were together, and punishing the weak Oxford bowling without mercy, Robinson never hit with greater vigour, and a collection on his behalf re sulted in his being presented with over £20. Oxford, on going in to bat, had quite a hopeless game, but Mr. Page (38 and 14), Mr. Bolitho (22 and 32), Mr. Grant-Asher (4 and 37), and Mr. Kemp (25 and 6) did their best. In the first innings of Oxford Watson took 6 wickets for 44 runs, and in the second Crossland bad a remarkable analysis—14 overs, 6 maidens, 14 runs, 5 wickets. 1st Inns. 2 ndInns. Total. June 18, Oxford University 101 336 527 Twickenham. Orleans Club 134 103 237 Oxford University won by 200 runs. Mr. A. G. Grant-Asher, in the second innings of Oxford, played remarkable cricket for 182. Up to a certain time his batting was admirable, but after making about 80 he gave several chances. The Orleans Club only got together a moderate team, and Burton and Mills had to do nearly all the bowling. The Oxonians had the match in hand from the start, and were seen to advantage at all points. Next to Mr. Grant-Asher, the best scorers were Mr. Buggles.Brise, 73 and 4, Mr. H. V. Page 36 and 43, Mr. Walker 39 and 2, and Mr. Leslie 5 and 34. The batting of the Orleans Club was decidedly weak, but Mills (35 and 21) played good cricket. In the first innings of the Orleans Club Mr. Robinson took 4 wickets for 36 runs, and in the second Mr. Peake obtained 7 for 39 runs. The match did not excite much interest.
