This rising County Club made a strenuous effort to assert its right to a place amongst the leading counties by arranging matches with Surrey and Yorkshire, and actually defeated the former on the home ground. The matches with Yorkshire, which on neither occasion played its representative eleven, would doubtless have both resulted in defeat had they been played out, and both matches against M.C.C and Ground were lost. The season’s results were thus not striking. The feature of the County cricket was the admirable batting displayed by Mr. C. Marriott. Matches played, 9—won 2, lost 4, drawn 3. May14, 16, Leicester.
