James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1884

Lancashire 190 213 403 Gloucestershire won by 6 wickets. A brillian t finish to a most unfortunate season. Gloucestershire won the toss, and went in on an excellent wicket. Messrs. W . G. Grace and Cranston batted very finely, the former scoring 112 and the latter 127. Mr. Grace’ s innings, which was marred only by a chance at slip, when he had made 103, was worthy o f his best days. Mr. Cranston had never before made 100 for the County, and his batting throughout was of the finest description. Hav ing made such an excellent start, the Gloucester shire men bowled and fielded admirably, and fu lly earned their success. Lancashire, however, did not lose without a hard struggle. In the first innings, P i l l in g made 46 (not out), Barlow 30, Briggs 28, and Mr. lloy le and Watson each 22, wh ile in the second Robinson played splendidly for 90. When Gloucestershire went in to make the 80 runs required to win, Mr. Pullen h it br illian tly for 35 and Mi*. W. G. Grace made 28. Matches plaj’ed, 10— won 1, lost 6, drawn 3. The batting figures sufficiently prove that with stronger bowling the County might yet have held its own. Mr. W . G. Grace has gone up from 31.16 to 36.17, Mr. Gilbert from 11.13 to 28.7, and Mr. Cranston from 11.10 to 33.6. The hard wickets, of course, account in a considerable measure for the improvement. Of the bowling, the less said the better, but it should be mentioned that Woof, who at times bowled exceedingly well, unfortunately injured his hand at the very height of the season.
