John and James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1882

87 1 st Jnns. 2 nd Inns. Total. Sept. I, Surrey 185 118 303 Oval. Kent 130 80 225 Surrey won by 78 runs. The home county was far better represented than Kent, and had the bcSt of the game throughout. Mr. W . W. Head played admirable cricket in the first innings for 72, and Mr. Pontifex with 24 and 37, and Mr. Lindsay with 12 and 41, rendered valuable assistance. Jones bowled extremely well for Surrey, taking C wickets in the match for 30 runs. On the Kent side, Mr. Patterson (41) and George Hearne (34) batted with great patience in the first innings, and in the second Mr. Bligh hit brilliantly for 47. In Surrey’ s second innings, Mr. A. Penn obtained 8 wickets at a cost of only 34 runs. Matches played, 14 — w on 4, los t 9, drawn 1. Mr. Lucas's place at the head of the batting only increases our regret that he did not play more often for the County. His average is nearly twice as good as in 1880. Mention has already been made of Mr. W . AV. Read, who lias gone up from 25 to 31. Morris Read has risen from 1(> to 18, but Mr. John Shuter made scarcely half as many runs as in the previous vear, and has fallen on the average from 20 to 15.10. Mr. Lindsay earned his prominent position by singularly consistent cricket, while the play of Mr. Pontifex wras very uneven—sometimes brilliant, sometimes quite the reverse. Jones's bowding figures are really good ; his straightness is best proved by the number of maiden overs. Barratt was terribly expensive in the early matches, but his analysis, calculated from the end of June, would come out very differently. He is easily disheartened by mistakes in the field, and more than once the assistance accorded him was of the feeblest. Mr. Parfitt had one day of great success, but he does not seem straight enough to be more than a change bowler. Potter and Blamires were quite harmless on the hard wickets in June, and their averages, it will be seen, are very bad. BATTING AVERAGES. Most in Most in Tlmo3 Matches.
