Bain ruined this return match, it being impossible to bowl a ball on the opening day. By this time the players concerned in the Nottingham dispute, excepting Shaw and Shrewsbury, had submitted to the Committee, and both Selby and Barnes returned to their places in the team. Flowers had been reinstated a week before. But for want of time Lancashire would certainly have added to their long list of victories. Mr. A. G. Steel’s all round cricket was the feature of the match. He scored 25 and 50, and took 6 wickets for 40 runs. Mr. O. P. Lancashire scored 5 and (not out) 47, and Watson 18 and (not out) 24. Mr. Hornby, for the only time last season in a grand match, was out twice for asingle figure. For Nottingham, Selby, on a slowwicket, played an excellent innings of 34. let Inns. 2 nd Inns. Total. During the second day play was quite out of the question. On paper the drawwas a very even one, but Middlesex had perhaps a trifling advantage, Mr. G. B. Studd was well set at the finish, and Messrs. Leslie and C. T. Stodd had still to go in. The special feature of the match was the brilliant hutincr of Mr. Vernon, who in the first innings of Middlesex made 97 on ot : * of the saturated wickets, which seem peculiarly suited to his style. pVw batsmen are so dangerous on wet grounds. For Nottingham, Barnes i! ude 49 and 12, Wright 6 and 43, and Butler 21 and 22. Scotton and Morlcy reappeared in the eleven. Mr. C. T. Studd took 8 wickets f°r 93 runs. Aug. 29.—Sheffield.—Notts c.
