The batting averages present, in some instances, a great contrast to those of 1880. Mr. A. J. Webbe has fallen from 35.12 to 15.11, and Mr. I. D. Walker from 24.11 to 16.1 ; while, on the other hand, Mr. C. T. Studd has made a remarkable advance, his average being 28.1 as against 16.5 in the previous season. Mr. Vernon’s figures are a trifle lower, and Mr. Ford has «mne down from 21.2 to 4. Mr. Alfred Lyttelton shows a marked im provement, having risen from 13.3 to 24.4. The good figures of Messrs. Wilkinson, G. B. Studd, and Robson, are chiefly gained by not out innings. Burton heads the bowling list with 14.1, while Mr. C. T. Studd took 6 more wickets than in 1880, and has a better average. Mr. Ford only bowled in three matches, and his average is 18.6 as against 14.22 in the previous year. Clarke was again found very useful, but his figures show a falling off. Mr. Robertson had to do a lot of work, but his bowling, though at times effective, was decidedly expensive. Mr. Paravicini, who bowled so well for Eton, could do very little for his County.
