109 O X F O R D . U NDER THE EXCELLENT CAPTAINCY o f Mr. A. H. Evans, Oxford cricket, severely depressed during the three previous seasons, revived in most remarkable fashion. The Eleven played six matches, two each being won, lost, and drawn. The victory over Cambridge was in itself sufficient to make the season remarkable. Mr. j* o “Walker was thought to be certain of his “ Blue,” hut illness com pelled him to leave off playing after the Seniors’ Match. The new ground in the Parks was opened, and will soon become first rate. May 16.—Oxford—Oxford University M.C.C. and Ground.— ( U.C.C. Review.) 1st Inns. 2nd Inns. Total. June 2, Oxford University 232 271 503 Oxford. Gentlemen of England 146 415 561 Drawn. Oxford had lost 6 wickets. Messrs. Evans and Patterson did not play. In the course of two days and a half 1,064 runs were scored for the loss of 36 wickets, but this large number might have been reduced had the boundary lines been placed out deeper. The hitting was terrific. For the Gentlemen Mr. A. J. Webbe made 30 and 112, Mr, Vernon 12 and 119, and Mr. I. D. "Walker 20 and 8 8 . For Oxford Mr. Leslie scored 36 and 93, Mr. Whiting 80 and 3, Mr. Thornton 16 and 54, and Mr. C. W. Wilson 5 and 51. June 20 .—Lord’s.—Oxford University r. M.C.C. and Ground.— ( M.C.C. The “ Past” had to complete their team by playing two professionals— William Mycroft and Mills—and on their first innings they played one man short, Mr. Buckland being absent. They batted badly on the first day, and could never make up for an unsuccessful beginning. Mr. H. G. Tylecote scored 14 and 54, and in the second innings the greatest of all Oxford batsmen, Mr. R. A. H. Mitchell, made 34 in a style that reminded the spectators of his early days. For the “ Present” team Mr. W. H. Patter-
