John and James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Companion 1882
100 the choice o f M o r le v in preference o f I l i l l was a mistake. In c om p l in ^ , his splendid batting in the University match, Mr. W . II. Patterson was as]<*° to play for the Gentlemen, but an injured hand compelled him to dccl^ and Mr. Vernon was selected. A s at the Oval the claims o f Mr. W. w’ Read were overlooked . Unfortunately the match was played on a wict ' which placed the batsmen at a complete disadvantage. The strain o f ncarf ten weeks' cricket had proved too severe for the central portion o f Lord’^ the surface o f the ground having become loose and crumbled. A s the con* sequence o f this the slow bowlers got a wonderful lot o f work on the ball and though in the two elevens there were eighteen rea lly dangerous bats’ men, the highest individual innings was only 34. D esp ite the unusual! small scores, however, the cricket from first to last was thorough ly interest ing. Never in his life did Mr. A . P . Lucas show more masterly defence Ground and bowling considered his two innings o f 21 and 19 were equal to a couple o f ordinary 60’s. W e cannot remember a match in fine weather where runs were so hard to get. Much as the w icket helped them the bowlers on both sides deserved all that could be said in their favour. ]\jr Grace was completely puzzled by P ca te : three times in .one over the ball beat him, but broke so much as to miss the w icket. The analysis which js given below will fu lly repay perusal. In the Gentlemen 's second innings Bates bowled 29 overs for 12 runs and a wicket, tax ing to the utmost the patience and skill o f Messrs. Penn and Lucas. The best performance, how- ever, was that o f Barlow— 7 wickets for 55 runs. Score and analysis U ly e t t , c T re v o r , b E v a n s M idw in te r , b G race . , L o ckw o od , b E v a n s . .
