James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899
8 2 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. H A M P S H I R E . OFFICERS FOR 1898.-President : Lord Aberdare. Committee : J. C. Moberly, E. H. Buckland, F. J. Blundell , R. S. Hankinson, C. Lamport, C. Robson, G. F. Mortimer , J. A. Fort , Capt . L. Russell , Major Bethune , Capt . Wynyard, H. Holmes, A. J. L. Hill. Hon. Sec . Dr. H. W. R. Bencraft . THEsupporters of Hampshirehadlittle cause for satisfaction in the records of the County Eleven . At their best there was perhaps no reason for appraising the all -roundcricket at a lower value thanin 1897. Whateverthe cause thefact remains that the full strength of the side was hardly ever available . Capt . Wynyard, in the first place , only played in three matches , and the importance of his loss cannot be overrated . Otherwise , too , there was a general air of uncertainty about the composition of the side . At the very best the bowling wouldhave been weak, no doubt . As it was, the cricket all round was only of moderate calibre . Barton, in comparison with previous years , was very un- successful with the bat . His failure , which was severely felt , was not the only one. Thebest feature of the season was, perhaps , the all -round cricket of A. J. L. Hill . Henot only batted consistently well , but bowled with no small success at times . MajorPoore proved himself a useful addition to the Eleven, both with the bat and in the field . E. A. English , too , at the end of the season showed decided promise with the bat . Baldwin , who was particularly effective in the later matches, was undoubtedly the best bowler of the team. It was un- fortunate that C. Heseltine , who had done good service early in the season , wasunable to play after the middle of July . In Tate the County introduced a youngbowler of somepromise whom a yprobably train on. Opponents. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches played , 18 ; won, 2 , drawn, 8 ; lost , 8.
