GLOUCESTERSHIRE's success was one of the most gratifying features of 1898. InAugust, indeed , they shared with Middlesex the chief interest of cricketers . A sanall-round side in the later matches they had no superiors . Altogether they played twenty matches, of which nine were won and three lost . O f the three defeats , too, the first was at the hands of Surrey at the Oval, when they had certainly not the best side ; the others in the north , at the end of July, in one of which W.G. was absent . Oneof the most satisfactory features wasthe level character of the batting . Jessop and Champainwere hardly at their best , but, in addition to W. G., C. L. Townsend, W. Troup, С. О. Н. Sewell, and R. W .Rice wereall reliable . Townsend'sall-roundcricket w a s oneof the mainfactors in Gloucestershire's success . O n all wickets he w a s successful with the ball , and some of his performances in the later matches were remarkable . Whata triumph 1898 was for him can be judged from the fact that he scored over a thousand runs and took a hundred andthirty wickets . A noticeable advance as an all -round cricketer was madeby W. S. A. Brown. H ebowled as well as batted with success , and is likely to be of great use. Opponents. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s. Matches played , 20 ; won, 9 ; drawn , 8 ; lost , 3.
