James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899
T H ECOUNTIESIN 1898. 6 9 E S S E X . OFFICERS FOR 1898.-President : Lord Rayleigh . Hon. Treasurer : C. M. Tebbutt. Committee : G. Buxton, Rev. R. C. Guy, F. R. Pelly , R. Y. Bevan, R. Cook, A. J. Edwards, R. C. Gosling , F. W. Holton, G. Pagenstecher , W . Comerford , A. S. Johnston, A. P. Lucas, H. G. Owen, J. J. Read, Swain, Chisenhale , Marsh. Secretary : O. R. Borradaile . A Tthe outset it looked as if Essex would be again well in the running for the premiership . Their victory over Surrey in the opening match proved themto be a good all -round side . But the expectations based on this success were hardly maintained. None the less , they were quite in the front rank. Theyshowed themselves capable of playing a plucky up-hill game on occasions , notably at Manchester , whenthey got 330 in the fourth innings for the loss of only six wickets . There was plenty of run-getting in the Eleven , and indeed on paper the batting was decidedly good. Still , it can hardly be said that they werequite as dependable as in 1897. I n C. J. Kortright , Mead, and F. G. Bull, Essex had three really good bowlers . There was variety , and though Bull was hardly as effective on hard as well as soft wickets , the trio did excellent work. Kortright's good pace at times made him quite irresistible , and his bowling was among the best of the year . In Young, Essex has apparently found a likely bowler . H e is left -hand, with an easy delivery , and seems likely to come on. Reliable fielding would have madethe Essex Eleven even more successful.
