Otherwise little wasdone, Mr. McGahey's 19 being the highest score subsequently . In the second innings , too, the earlier wickets did most of the run-getting , though Russell played a useful innings of 30 towards the finish . Carpenter (34 and 53) and Mr. O w e n(61 and 10) hadthe best aggregates . Derbyshire's batting was even less successful . Storer (27 and 41) again was the principal scorer , with Bag- shaw(31 and29) not far behind. G. Davidson's bowling for Derbyshire was thebest of the match. Essexw o nb y 129 runs. Luck favoured Derbyshire , and their score of 161 for five wickets , on the first day practically gave them the match. Of their total of 205 fromthe bat seven of the Elevencontributed twenty-five . T h e balance of 180 c a m efrom Mr. Evershed(66), W. Sugg (42 not out), Storer (40), and Bagshaw(32), Leicester- shire , in their turn, had an exceptionally trying time of it at the wickets . Run- getting was especially difficult , and though Mr. D e Trafford in the second innings utilised the forcing game to the tune of 29 runs there was never any chance of Derbyshire going in a second time. Surrey with the advantage of first innings , scored 399. Nine of the Eleven got double figures , with Abel (88), Holland (51), Baldwin (47) and Mr. Jephson (41) the best ofthem. ThoughDerbyshire began badly , losing four of their most reliable bats for 61, a useful stand by Chatterton (49) and G. Davidson (41), who added 84, improved matters considerably . Mr. Jephson's lobs had separated the two professionals , and he dismissed all the remaining batsmen for an additional 52. In the follow on Mr. L. G. Wright played well for 73, but of the rest G.
