Woodiwiss , Charles Wright . Secretary : W .Barclay Delacombe, 7, Irongate , Derby. DERBYSHIRE'S record was better than in 1897. It could hardly have been worse a dispassionate critic might urge . Theexception would be reasonable considering that the Eleven did not wina matchin the previous season . Still , last year's figures were to a close observer hardly as encouraging . TheEleven didbeat Hampshire and Leicestershire , it is true . Their batting , too , against Hampshire, at Derby, was very considerably above the average , and their total on that occasion the second highest of the year. All the same, they were hardly as good an all -round side as in 1897. Storer , the captain , S. H. Evershed, L. G. Wright, Chatterton , G. Davidson, and Bagshawwere all reliable batsmenas of yore. Storer in particular was in brilliant form, quite oneof the best batsmenof the year in fact . H escored 1,148 runs, andhadan average of over 50 runs. In bowling Derbyshire was very weak. The County w a ssadly out of luck in losing Hulmeand Porter, both very dangerous bowlers . As it was, GeorgeDavidsonhadto bear pretty well the wholebrunt. of the bowling . Taking into account the slight support he received his figures were most creditable . Owing to an injured hand Storer was unable to keep wicket in some matches-a great loss . Derbyshire's out-cricket was its.. weakpoint. Opponents. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches played, 15 ; won, 2 ; drawn, 7 ; lost , 6. Matchesw o n(2) .
