Marlborough. Lord's , July 27 and 28. Rainunfortunately prevented a definite result to an interesting g a m e Thescoring on both sides was above the average , and the batting generally bright with plenty of hit. The best of some uniformly good batting was the innings of 139 by R. H. Spooner for Marlborough. C. J. Parton (78), C. S. Hannay(65), and H. B. Grylls were the chief scorers for Rugby. W h e nrain finally stopped play Marlborough were 36 on with nine wickets to fall . Marlborough , 284 and 56 (7 wickets ) ; total , 340. Rugby, 304 . (10) Middlesexv. Surrey. Lord's, Aug. 8, 9 and 10. Theluck of the toss certainly stood Middlesex in good stead . Thewicket at the outset , though slow, was easy, and Middlesex took advantage of it suffi- ciently to score 293. To this result P. F. Warner(79) andA. E. Stoddart (62) mainlycontributed . Unfortunately for Surrey Lockwoodwas ill , so muchso that hewasnot able to bowl at all onthe third day. O n the second daythe wicket grew more and more difficult , and Surrey did better than was expected . Their total of 218, in which Hayward's 66 was the chief item, was indeed, under the circumstances , a creditable performance. Fortune favoured Middlesex again at the finish . Showers kept the wicket fairly easy for them inthe second innings , and J. Douglas (112 not out), though missed before h e hadscored , and A. E. Stoddart (54) were seen to the greatest advantage. Closing the innings at 212 Middlesex left their opponents with practically a certain defeat as the wicket was. Abeltried hardto save the game, andK. J. K e y(21) and Smith (F. E.) nearly succeeded . As it was, Middlesex wona few minutes before time by 136 runs. Middlesex , 293 and 212 (3 wickets , innings declared) ; total , 505. Surrey , 218 and 151 ; total , 369 .
