Asthe wicket was, the Marylebone Eleven , weak to a degree in batting , waswith Mead, Roche, and G. Davidson to bowl, almost strong enough. The scoring generally was low, and indeed there were only two exceptions , fortu- nately oneon each side . G. E. Winter, in the University's first innings , made 86 out of 128 while he was batting , and in anhour and a quarter . In M.C.C.'s second innings G. Davidson was responsible for 93 of 168 from the bat, and henearly wonthe match for his side . A s it was, Cambridge, for w h o mC. J. Burnupmade22 and 52, wonwith only seventeen runs to spare . Hearne, as usual , bowled with success , but Rawlin was strangely unsuccessful , andthere was only Woodcockof any account in reserve . Underthe circumstances , Derbyshire's total of 261, for which they were mainly indebted to L. G. Wright(81) and Chatterton (66),wasnot surpris- ing. O nthe other side , Dr. G. Thorntonwas the highest scorer with 39 and 14. G. Davidson's bowling was the best feature of the match. At the end, whenM.C.C. required only one run to avert an innings defeat , he dismissed G. G. Hearne, J. T. Hearne, and Whiteside with successive balls . Derbyshire w o nby aninnings and one run. Derbyshire , 261. M.C.C. and Ground, 94 and 166; total , 260. G.Davidson (Derbyshire ) Overs. Wickets. 1 2 T h ecricket of the Cambridge Eleven was disappointing in every way. M.C.C. had Roche, G. Davidson, and Attewell to bowl, and although the University hadthe advantage of first knock, this trio wasgood enough to get themout twice for totals of under 200. G. L. Jessop , whomade47 in the first innings in thirty -five minutes , and C. E. M. Wilson (71 and 18) alone got double figures each time, and the former's 63 was the best aggregate on the side . O n the other hand, the Marylebone innings , if prematurely closed , was full of life . C. W. Wright (77) and F. Mitchell (161 ) put on 208 in two hours and thirty- five minutesfor the first wicket, and with 117 runs addedat a cost of twomore batsmen the Captain declared . Cambridge made a better show whenthey wentin a second time, but, in spite of the plucky play of the tail , were not able to put M.C.C. in again . M.C.C. and Ground wonby an innings and 13 M.C.C. and Ground, 325 (3 wickets , innings declared ) . Cambridge University , 142 and 170 ; total , 310. r u n s . Roche(1st inns .
