THATthe newSecretary of the Marylebone Club was equal to all the responsi- bilities of his position wasshownby the enlarged programmearranged for 1898 . That it wascarried through without the smallest hitch is the best testimony to his powers of organisation and capacity for management. Wereproof wanting it would be enough to point to the fact that nearly two hundredmatches-one hundred and ninety-three , to be precise were carried out , and successfully , during the season of four months . Of these only thirty odd ended unfavour- ably. O n the other hand, no less than 109 were won and 51 drawn. Marylebone's highest total in any match was 494 against the Royal Artillery ; the largest against it the 313 of the Minor Counties . In first -class fixtures M.C.C.'s best innings was 325 for three wickets against Cambridge University at Lord's .
