James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899

T H EE N G L I S HT E A MI N A U S T R A L I A , 1 9 could be left out and really never be missed m a ybe taken as a forcible illustration of the all -round strength of the Australian Eleven. N o one will grudge Australian cricketers the full credit due to their fine performances . That the English team should haveonly w o none of the five test matches is disappointing . The more honour to the Australians with only comparatively a limited number of cricketers to choose from, and infinitely less advantages for the cultivation of first -class cricket. Mentionof the tour without reference to the batting of Clem Hill and J. Darling, to the bowling of Jones , the all -round cricket of Noble and of Harry Trott , would be quite incomplete . Nor would any reference be quite satisfactory from an Australian standpoint were not stress laid on and due praise given to Trott for his judicious and able captaincy . That it conduced in no small degree to the all-round success of the side goes without saying . So much for the purely cricketical part of the tour. Socially the Englishmen made themselves very popular, and had a good time of it . Mr. Stoddart , in commenting on his experiences of the tour , complained , and with some reason , of the offensive attitude of the spectators in many cases . In parts the strong dissatisfaction he expressed was fully justified beyond a doubt. The conduct of the crowd has latterly in m a n yquarters given rise to anxiety , and it cannot fail to serve a useful purpose if Mr. Stoddart's timely warnings receive the careful consideration they merit . The results of the tour , with full scores of the matches and averages , follow:- A U S T R A L I A R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Matches played , 22 ; won, 6 ; drawn, 11 ; lost , 5. Club. Opnts.
