A very fine all -round player , being a splendid hitter , an extremely fine field at long-leg , cover -point , and mid-wicket , and a very goodchange bowler (lobs ), Buthe will best be rememberedon account of his batting . The best innings he ever played washis 165 for Gentlemen v. Players , at the Oval, in 1865 , madewithout a chance. H ewas famous for the power of his driving , and when playing for Middlesex v. Surrey , at the Oval, in 1865 , hehit a ball clean out of the ground, a feat performed but by few in first -class matches on that ground . For Middlesex v. Gloucestershire , at Clifton , in 1883 , he scored 145, with the Hon. A. Lyttelton (181), adding no less than 324 for the second wicket . Played for Harrowagainst Eton, at Lord's in 1860, 1861 and 1862 , and in after years gave the young cricketers at Harrowthe benefit of his experience and advice . His memorywill be cherished at Harrowas long as the school exists . N o better example of a thorough English cricketer could be mentioned. Born January 8, 1844.
