O B I T U A R YF O R1 8 9 8 2 7 1 ELLISON, M R. MICHAELJ. (July 12). The President of the Yorkshire County C.C. From1838 to 1853 he appeared repeatedly for the Sheffield team. In 1852 he played for the North against the South, in 1853 for the Gentlemen of Englandagainst those of the M.C.C., and in the sameyear for England v. M.C.C. The Bramall LaneGroundwas opened in 1855 chiefly through his exertions . Theformation of the County Club in 1861 was also mainly dueto Mr. Ellison , who then became, and ever since remained, its president . B o r nJune, 1817. G A R N I E R, R E V. THOMASPARRY. Died in Switzerlandon M a r c h21 last . H e was educated at Winchester, and played against Eton in 1858 and 1859 . H erepresented Oxford against Cambridge at Lord's in 1861, 1862 , and 1863. The deceased gentleman, whowas born at Longford, in Derbyshire , on February 22, 1841 , was a very stylish and correct batsman. In 1861 , whenbut 20 years of age, he was chosen to play in both the Gentlemen v. Players ' matches. H e was an Hon. Canon of Norwich Cathedral . Height5ft. 11½ inches , and weight 11 st . 4 lbs . GUTTERES, REV. GEORGE GILBERT ( March 2). Oneof the Winchester Eleven which played against Eton in 1877 and 1878. W h e nat Oxford he played in a few of the University matches, but not against Cambridge. H ewas rector of Carlton -Colville , near Lowestoft , at the time of his death . Age 3 8. H A D O W, M R. WALTERHENRY(Sept. 15). H e was educated at Harrow, and madehis first appearance at Lord's in the Public Schools match of 1866, scoring 31. Mr. Hadowwill chiefly be remembered on account of his long innings of 217 for Middlesex v. M.C.C. , at Lord's , in 1871. This was the first 200 score hit in a great matchat Lord's since Mr. William Ward's m e m o r a b l e278 as far b a c kas 1820. He was one of Her Majesty's Prison Commissioners for Scotland andlate Chief Secretary of the Primrose League in Scotland . Born Sept. 25, 1849 . H E L M, M R. G. F. (March31st ).- Amembero the Marlborough Eleven in the fifties , and of the Cambridge Elevens of 1862 and 1863. H e played in several matches under the feigned appellation of " Fredericks ." He subsequently represented Sussex. Bornat Worthing, January 11, 1838 . HOLMES, J. H. (Nov. 14). A well -knownumpire. Hadbeen " coach " at Bath College during the whole time that institution existed . JENNER, REV. HENRY LASCELLES, D.D. (September 18) . First Bishop of Dunedin. Played for Cambridge v. Oxford in 1841 , and was younger brother of Herbert Jenner (nowHerbert Jenner-Fust), the veteran wicket- keeper . In 78th year . LANG, M R. G. L., I.C.S. (retired ) (June 2). H ewas educated at Harrow, and played against Eton and Winchester in 1854 , but only against Eton in 1855. A nexcellent fast round-armedbowler, with m u c hbreakfromthe off , and a good average bat and field . Elder brother of Mr. R. Lang, the celebrated fast bowler of Harrowand Cambridge. Age62. LATHOM, LORD (November19). W a s better known to cricketers as Lord Skelmersdale , a great lover and no meanexponent of our noble game. In 1860 he was President of the Marylebone Club, and in 1865 one of the Vice-Presidents of the newly-formed Lancashire County Club. Agood all -round player . He was a member of manyclubs , including the Mary- lebone and I Zingari . In 1880 he wae raised to the Peerage by the title of Earlof L a t h o m. BornDecember12, 1837.
