Gentlemen (70), at Shanklin , Isle of Wight, September 5.-Ladies (114) v. Gentlemen ( 111 ) , at Epsom, Surrey, on September 6. The Gentlemen batted with broom-sticks , and batted , bowled and fielded left -hand.-Ladies (75 and 33 for 7 wickets ) v. Gentlemen (40 and 46), at Bergains Hill , near Sittingbourne , on September 8. The Gentlemenbatted, bowled and fielded left -hand. O n June 30, a team of Ladies (headed by Miss Kitty Valentine ), played the Clapham United , attired in silk hats and flannels , at the BroomwoodGround. Curiosities. TheMountVictoria Club beat the School by one run, at MountVictoria (N.S.W. ), October 8.-A. W. Stacey , of the Street (Somerset ) Club , during the past season , made 1,003 runs and took 112 wickets , a notable perform- ance in local cricket .-In a house match at Cheltenham College , R. Haines hit a nine and twosixes in one over for Leconfield v. WestDayBoys.-Whilst Hirst and Haighwere makinga record stand for the ninth wicket in first- class matches , against Surrey at Bradford , D. Hunter waited three hours with his pads on and then didn't bat, the innings being declared closed .--In the first innings of Lancashire v. Essex , at Manchester , T. M. Russell stumped two andcaught four.-" Under a blazing tropical sun, with the American fleet in the bay, a bombardmentimminent, and the natives on the point of rising to massacre the whole crowd, a little gameof cricket was arranged between Manila and the Immortalité team-and came off too . "-Penang Gazette . From August 1, 1897 , to July 31 , 1898 , E. H. D. Sewell (in India ) scored 2,665 runs for . 19 completed innings , average 140-2 , and took 157 wickets for 1,449 runs , average 9.5 . During this period he scored 12 centuries .-On June 21 , Capt . Farie ( 127 ) and Lieut . Sellicoe ( 120 ) put on 251 for the first wicket of H.M.S. Centurion and Handyv. H.M.S. Narcissus and Victorious , at Wei- Hai- Wei, our recently acquired territory in China . This is surely a proof , were any needed ,of the popularity of the King of Games.-Eleven Hornbys played Knowsley Hall , at Knowsley Park,on July 2, andw o n, scoring 202 against their opponents ' 50.-In a matchbetween Folke- stone and West Kent , at Folkestone ,July 26, four of the players wore spectacles . (This is not a record .) WhenMonmouthshire had lost 9 wickets for 132 runs against Wiltshire , at Newport, the last man, P. C. Phillips , was absent , and the players left the field . Before they had got into the pavilion , however , Phillips appeared , and the Wiltshire captain generously consented to allow the innings to be resumed . The last wicket added 87 runs , Phillips making 46(not out). OnJuly 20, a match was played at Parkside between Parkside (Worcester Park) and Olive's School (Wimbledon ), both teams being com- posed of boys under 14 years of age. For the former W. A. B.
