James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899
2 2 8 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' ANNUAI. T H EB O W L E R S . J. T. HEARNEstands out as incomparably the best bowler of the year. N o t that his record approaches that of Richardson in 1897 , or any way near it . Still , considering the amountof work he did, his performance was one of great credit . H e bowled nearly five hundred overs more than any other bowler during the season ; he was, too , the ouly one who took over twohundred wickets . Richardson's Australian trip seemed to have taken a good deal of the old sting out of his bowling , at all events for the time. Later in the season hecameon again, but his dellvery seemed to have lost some of its pace. With the wickets mostly in favour of the bat the bowlers generally showed up credit- ably . Haywardnever got over the effects of an early chill , andwas compara- tively a failure . Otherwise most of the chief bowlers of 1897 were again well to the front . Oneof the most encouraging features of the year was the success of the young Yorkshireman , Rhodes, whotook a foremost place at once among thebowlers of the day. Another noteworthy incident wasthe return to first- class cricket of W. H. Lockwood, who fully established his claim to be one of -quite the best bowlers of the year. A. E. Trott , too , thoroughly confirmed in Middlesex cricket the promise of his excellent bowling for M.C.C. in 1897. Anotherhigh reputation restored was that of C. L. Townsend, who seemed to have regained a good deal of the devil he seemed to have lost the previous season . Abowler who showed a distinct advance was Mead, whose figures , considering the characterof the wickets andthe batsmenhe h a dtomeet, were very creditable . Over200Wickets: Overs. Maidens. R u n s.
