GENERALLYthe conditions favoured run-getting , so muchso that the averages of the leading batsmen were appreciably higher than they have been of late years , certainly than those of 1897. K. S. Ranjitsinhji , whohadsuch an excep- tional record in 1896 , was away, so that a formidable competitor for first honourswas out of the running last summer. A sit was, fourteen batsmenhad averages of over forty runs against six in 1897. Theyounger Quaife , whowas only second.to Abel in the previous season , this time headed the list , a distinc- tion he thoroughly earned by cricket of consistent excellence . Abel, for the second year in succession , had a unique record as the only batsman whoscored over two thousand runs . In somerespects C. B. Fry's were the best figures of the year. His aggregate for thirty -three completed innings was close on eighteen hundred runs , and just at one period of the season his scoring was quite upto the standard of Ranjitsinhji , if not of W.G. Grace at his best . Of the rest G u n n, Shrewsbury, Hayward, Storer , and Tunnicliffe were the most successful of the professionals . Of the younger players Tyldesley madea great advance, and was in quite the first rank. Of the amateurs W. G. was again well up. Ofthe rest , A. E. Stoddart , L. Palairet , F. S. Jackson, F. G. J. Ford, and J. R. Mason, of the old hands, hadthe best figures . Little behind wereW . Troup, D. L. A. Jephson, C. McGahey, P. Perrin , C. L. Townsend. C. O. H. Sewell , and C. J. Burnup. Altogether thirty batsmenscored over a thousand runs during the season . Hayward's 315 not out for Surrey v. Lanca- shire , in August, at the Oval , was the highest score of the year.
