T H EG A M E . 1.-A match is played between two sides of 11 players each, unless otherwise agreed to. Eachside hastwo innings , taken alternately , except in the case provided for in L a w53. The choice of innings shall be decided by tossing . R U N S .-Thescore shall be reckoned by runs . A run is scored :- 1. So often as the batsmanafter a hit , or at anytime while the ball is in play, shall have crossed and madegood their ground from end to end. 2.-Forpenalties under Laws16, 34, 41, and allowances under 44. Anyrun or runs so scored shall be duly recorded by scorers appointed for the purpose . The side which scores thegreatest n u m b e rof runswinsthe match. N omatchis w o nunless played out or given up, except in the case provided for in L a w45. A P P O I N T M E N T O F U M P I R E S . 3.-Before the commencementof the matchtwo umpires shall be appointed o n efor eache n d, T H EB A L L. 4. The ball shall weigh not less than five ounces and a half, nor more than five ounces andthree -quarters . It shall measure not less than nine inches , nor more than nine inches andone-quarter in circumference . Atthe beginning of each innings either side maydemanda newball . T H EB A T 5. Thebat shall not exceed four inches and one-quarter in the wides part ; it shall not be more than 38 inches in length . T H EW I C K E T S . 6. Thewickets shall be pitched opposite and parallel to each other at a distance of 22 yards . Eachwicket shall be eight inches in width, and consist ofthree stumps, with two bails upon the top. The stumps shall be of equal and sufficient size to prevent the ball passing through, 27 inches out of the ground . The bails shall be each four inches in length , and, when in position onthe top of the stumps, shall not project morethan half -an-inch above them. Thewickets shall not be changed during a match unless the ground between thembecomeunfit for play, and then only by consent of both sides . T H EB O W L I N G C R E A S E . 7.-Thebowling crease shall be in a line with the stumps ; 6 feet 8 inches inlength ; the stumps in the centre ; with a return crease at each end, at right angles behind the wicket. T H EP O P P I N GC R E A S E . 8. Thepopping crease shall be markedfour feet from the wicket , paralle to it, anddeemedunlimited in length.
