Mertens (captain ) : Afree andfearless batsman; after an unfortunate start has scored consistently well , playing some very fine innings onthe hard wickets ; his best strokes are on the leg side . A brilliant field anywhere, particularly useful at point . As captain he has kept his teamwell together in the field by his example and judgment. L. H. Read: T h emost useful memberof the team. Mediumright -hand bowler ; he keeps a very good length , with a very effective off -break ; has been rather over-bowled, andso lost some of the sting he had; has bowled over 300 overs , and has an average of 11:57 . His batting has fallen off lately , owing to a weak stroke off hislegs , getting caught at square leg ; played a splendid innings against East- bourne. Captain next year. *R. F. Cardale : Quite the best bat in the team; hashadhard luck in letting his average fall below 20 at the last match; his cutting and driving are always a treat to watch, and few will forget his display against Brighton and the Dolphins . As a bowler he prefers a hard wicket ; still inclined to full pitches to leg. A very safe and clean field . G. E. Greene : H a snot been very successful the latter part of the term, either in batting or bowling . Heplayed a very good innings against Eastbourne ; his best stroke is a very hard drive past cover , which is rarely stopped . Asa bowler has the worst of luck . In fielding he is safe , although his ground work is not so good. *H. B. Drake : Has not been very consistent as a batsman, though a very pretty one to watch ; plays twice as hard as he did last year, very strong on the off-side , though weak onthe leg ; played asplendid innings against the Masters. Gets a bat for fielding , being always a safe andclean field at cover . A. A. Hathorn : Hasgreatly improved this term in batting ; his best stroke is ahard square cut, and healso possesses a hard drive to extra cover ; weakonthe leg side . A trifle slow, though always safe in the out-field . *A. C. Willmot : Didnot play in the team till half term, and since has been top of batting average. Doesnot start confidently , but whenonce set is hard to move. H e loses half his runs by slow running . The one weak point in a very good fielding team, being very slow to start , and an atrociously bad thrower . C. H. Howell : Except for two very good innings , v. Brighton and Old Boys, has been very disappointing . He plays as hard and correct a game as any- one in the eleven, being very strong on the off-side . His chief faults are being mortally afraid of a " yorker," and on a fast wicket playing muchtoo late at any lowball . Not always a safe catch , though his ground fielding is splendid . *G. B. Lancaster : Took a long time to start , his average for first half term being six ; lately he has been batting very well , very strong on the leg side . Too prone to nervousness , which has rather spoilt him. Has fielded brilliantly at third man; though slow , is the safest out -field in the team; throws very well . His bowling has all gone . G. M. Gill : Slow right -handed bowler with effective off -break, though apt to bowl too short at times . In batting he plays a very careful game, though much too afraid to hit a loose ball , and always at present certain to get out off a rising ball in the slips . Agood safe field anywhere , especially extra cover . *D. W. A. Bull : Gets his place in the team as wicket -keeper, but can hardly be said to have been successful there , letting nearly 100 byes in the first six matches . Lately has been better , catching agood manyat the wicket , standing back, but has missed several that have proved very fatal in the M.C.C. match. Keeps some nice strokes , especially on the legs . Useful bowler on soft wicket .
