THE UNIVERSITIES A N DPUBLIC SCHOOLSIN 1898. 1 4 7 OXFORD ELEVEN IN 1898.-B. D. Bannon (Tonbridge and Oriel ) : A good batwith a nice style . Active field . B. J. T. Bosanquet (Etonand Oriel ) : Very useful all -round cricketer . Played a good not-out innings against Cambridge, andbowled well at times . F. H. B. Champain (CheltenhamandHertford ) : A fine bat; but hardly did himself justice this season . A really splendid field . Captain 1899. F. E. Cunliffe (Eton and New) : A very good left -hand bowler . Muchimproved bat , and brilliant field . Captained his side with great success , andthoroughly deserved his victory at Lord's . G. E. Bromley -Martin (Eton andNew) : Agood bat, particularly on soft ground ; rather too fond of getting in front of the wicket . Safe field . A. Eccles (Reptonand Trinity ) : Somewhat unfortunate at the beginning of the season, but played a splendid innings against Cambridge. Very quick on his legs , and severe on slow bowling. Useful field . F. L. Fane (Charterhouse and Magdalen) : Agood , steady bats- m a n, with strong defence , and excellent field . R. E. Foster (Malvern and University ) : Abrilliant cricketer . Hits finely , andsplendid field at short slip . R. W. Fox (Wellington and Hertford) : Keeps wicket well . A cool and collected batsman. E. C. Lee (Winchester and University ): Another good all- roundcricketer . Especially good at a pinch . Did excellent service at Lord's . F. W. Stocks (Denstone and Oriel ) : Bore the brunt of the bowling with Cunliffe , and is also a good left -hand bowler, somewhat slower than his captain . Dangerousbat,and capital field . B. Scobell (captain) : W a sunfor- tunately handicapped by a bad wrist and other misfortunes , and so had an unsuccessful season . Agood all -round cricket . H. Martyn (secretary ) : A first -class wicket -keeper , especially good on leg side . Very quick at stumping . Afine bat; would be first -rate if he had more patience . L. W. Reynolds : Verygood fast bowler , with deadly off -break . Very useful bat. Safe field . J. E. Stevens : Thebest bat in the team. Scores very fast whenset , and has some beautiful strokes . Showed wonderful consistency throughout the season . Fine field , andcan bowl. O. C. Mordaunt : Useful bat to go in late . Excellent field in the slips . Canbowl nowandthen. L. G. Jackson : Goodfast bowler , with beautiful action . Met with success with the bat in other than College matches. W. H. Arundell : A good bat, but had a disappointing season. Improved in the field , but still a bit slow . Can bowl when wickets are no object . A. J. Hook : A good left -handed batsman, very useful to go in first .
