James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899

1 2 2 LILLYWHITE'S CRICKETERS' ANNUAL. T H Eloss of such a brilliant batsmanas K. S. Ranjitsinhji could not fail to havea prejudicial effect on the whole tone of Sussex. But this was not the onlypiece of ill -luck that befel the side . G. Brannwhohadshownhewas in his very best form, was unfortunately , owing to illness , absent for a great part of the year. W. N e w h a m, to add to their misfortunes , was quite out of form, andthe samemight be said of Marlow, though he played some good innings in August. But for C. B. Fry and W. L. Murdochthe batting would have come out very badly . Fry's consistently high scoring was one of the most noteworthy incidents of the year. Six times he scored over a hundred, and twice in the same match, to wit against Middlesex , at Brighton , whenhemade 108 and 123 not out. H ejust failed , too , to accomplish that very rare record asecond time at Brighton ,scoring 99 and 133 against Hampshire. Hisaggregate of 1,604 runs for 31 innings was a great performance . Murdoch set the side an excellent example of pluck , and his batting was always reliable . In P. H. Latham, the old Cantab, Sussex got a useful addition to the batting strength , and C. L. A. Smith , the Captain of Brighton College , also showed very promising form . In bowling Sussex was very weak. Tate and Bland did most of the work, but there was little change. Towards the end of the season W .Humphreys, jun., a lob bowler like his father , was tried with some success . R e s u l t so fM a t c h e s . Matches played , 20 ; won, 3 ; drawn, 8 ; lost , 9.
