Following on 221 to the badthey lost Abel for twelve , and at the end of the seconddaywerestill 89 to the bad with nine wickets in hand. O nthe third daymatters improved considerably for them, and thanks chiefly to Brockwell (100), Hayward(90) , and Holland (88) the total eventually reached 468. At thefinish Somersetshire were 205 behind with sevenof their best wickets in hand. The match realised altogether 1,203 runs for thirty -four wickets . Surrey, 236 and 468 ; total , 704. Fowler and others Somerset were able to win with plenty to spare . U pto quite an advanced stage ofthe gamethe two sides were apparently very evenly matched. Oxford , on thecompletion of aninnings , had a lead of seventeen runs, anadvantage for whichthey hadto thank B. D. Bannon(69) and G. Bromley-Martin (65). Most ofthe Somersetshire batsmendid fairly well in the second innings . Eight got double figures , with W.F. Trask's 60 the best of them. Of 227 wanting to winOxford had at the end of the second day made65 for the loss of two bats- men. Rain effectually settled their prospects for the following day, and, indeed, the nine remaining wickets only added 61. Gill's all -round cricket was of great use to Somersetshire .
