Murray-Anderdon, Taunton. Treasurer : G. Fowler. Captain : S. M. J. Woods. THE Somersetshire Eleven, under the captaincy of S. M. J. Woods, have of late years shown themselves to be adepts at playing an up-hill game. It can hardly be said that they kept up their reputation last season . All the same, the very composition of the side makes for uncertainty . Someof the best amateurs cannot take their places in the team till August, so that in the later matches the County has been generally seen at its best . Not that there was any ground for claiming any great improvement in 1898. As a matter of fact , though the batting figures were by comparison fairly good, the out-cricket was so weakas to more than counter -balance it . O nthe other hand, Somersetshire was hardly ever seen quite at its best . Captain Hedley was a very negligable quantity , a great pity , as his all-round cricket would have beenof great service . Mr. W. N. Roe's high scoring in August emphasised the regret that he was not able to play more regularly . A ninjury prevented the captain , S. M. J. Woods, playing in the last two matches, the greatest loss of all. With the batting serious fault could not perhaps be found. Lionel Palairet played consitently well , and Mr. S. M. J. Woods, G. Fowler,V. T. Hill , and R. C Palairet of the regular team were all dangerous . On the other hand the tail was a little more pronounced . In bowling Tyler had once moreto bear thebruntof the work, andon thehard wickets he wasless effective . W o o d s could not bowl much, which was a great loss to the side . Gill's bowling was found of use , but the changes altogether were moderate, although G. Fowler andRobsonwereat times successful . Opponents. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
