James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1899

T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1898. 1 0 7 (4) M iddlesexv. Notts. Nottingham , Aug. 18, 19 and 20. Superior on the form of the matchat all points the Middlesex Eleven had a neasy victory . Notts got first knock, but the batting generally failed , and inboth innings Trott's bowling proved singularly effective . Shrewsbury failed eachtime for Notts, andonly seven of the side got into double figures in each innings . The only scores of any real account were W.Gunn's (57 and 32) and A. O. Jones' 11 and 50. O nthe other hand, several of the Middlesex Eleven punished the moderate bowling of Notts severely . P. F. Warner (88) and F. G. J. Ford (102) took the edge off it completely , and subsequently R. N. Douglas (64), Rawlin (61), andTrott (77) scored freely off it. It was Trott's dayaltogether . Besides his innings of 77 he took thirteen wickets of Notts. Middlesexwonby aninnings and136 runs . Manchester , May19, 20 and 21. Thefirst time that Middlesex had metCambridge. Unfortunately rain reduced the cricket to such an extent that a definite result was never at any period probable . O nthe first day play was only possible uptill luncheon , andin that time six Cambridge wickets had fallen for 63. A resumption was not possible until the third morning, and then the wicket was so muchin favour of thebowlers that the gamelost a good deal of its interest . Nineteen wickets fell for an aggregate of 193, and at the finish Cambridge were 52 on with five wickets to fall . Thehighest , as well as by far the best innings of the match, was J. R. Head's 43 for Middlesex . Trott , owing to an injury , was unable to bat or to bowl in Cambridge's second innings . Rawlin's bowling for Middlesex was perhaps the best feature of the match. Cambridge University , 109 and 45 (5 wickets ) ; total , 154. Middlesex , 102 . B A T T I N G A V E R A G E S . T i m e s M o s tin. I n n s. n o to u t. R u n s. a nInns.
